Crazy math problem - are you up to the challenge?

ok: here's the conundrum. Supposing I was standing on Mt. Everest, and the moon was directly above me, at it's average distance from Earth, how many elephant trunks would it take to make a tower from the top of the mountain to the moon. (By the way, I wouldn't just be stacking them, I would be welding them together.) Also, to make it easier to climb, how many cups of pre-compressed brown sugar would it take to build a 2-foot diameter column of brown sugar around the trunks?
