A children's book, a work of fiction, written about Scandinavian mountain climbers who befriend each other?

There might have been a tragic death or accident (perhaps an avalanche) towards the end of the novel. I remember reading it for my sixth grade reading class. If I had to guess, it's not modern, and may have been written many years ago.
