Why is it that if you are a male and not a redneck that means your gay?

I live in a small mountain rural mountain town and my neighbors are all the stereotypical rednecks and they aren't very smart either. Anyway I moved here from the city with my family and am more of the intellectual film type of guy. The neighbors call me gay when I've said all of 3 words to any of them. I dress normally and have no lisp but I do where a college sweatshirt around. Sometimes I think they are just jealous. Why is it that a guy has to be a gun toting, beer drinking, tractor driving guy, to be considered straight? I just don't get it
